Stephanie Meyer wrote the #1 New York Times bestselling novel, Twilight, in 2005. I ended up choosing this novel because I didn’t realize how hooked I was in the series until the movie came out in 2008. After I saw I movie I ended up reading the book and I fell in love with the entire series. This series was the start to my love towards vampires and werewolves, so I decided to read the series again for old time sake.

Characters
Bella Swan, a seventeen-year-old girl who lived in Arizona with her mother, but moved to Forks, Washington to live with her father for a year. She has long dark brown hair, pale skin, and smells like flowers. Bella is an average character with awkward, curious and mysterious qualities. She thinks differently than and has a different view on life than most people in the novel and in reality do. She ends up meets the mysterious Cullen family, and falls in love with Edward. Not too soon later does she discover they are all vampires. This fact draws her even closer to him that ever before. Bella said, “About three things were absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him-and I didn’t know how dominant that part might be- that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him."
Edward Cullen, a seventeen year old vampire, who has been that old for a century. He can read the thoughts of those who surround him. He has reddish brown hair, white ice-cold skin, “and has a perfect bone structure”, said Bella. He thinks of himself and his kind as abominations and monsters. He said, “What is I’m not the hero? What if I’m the bad guy?” He thinks of himself this way because it disgusts him to know how easy it is to take someone’s life and soul away from them. Edward and his family are different from the others of his kind because they only hunt and drink animal blood. Even though they do this he still is tentative when around Bella because he is afraid he will give in and hurt her. Edward is completely and inevitably in love with Bella as well. His love for her is so strong, he would do anything thing for Bella. His whole life is now about Bella and desires to be with her forever. His life isn’t complete; he would rather die if Bella wasn’t in his life.
Jacob Black, a fifteen year old wolf, who has known Bella since they were little kids. He is a tan Native American, with long black hair and a perfect face, like Edwards. Jacob secretly likes Bella, even though she and everyone else know he does too. Bella looks at Jacob like her little brother and nothing more. During prom Jacob said, “Can I cut in? You look very pretty.” Jacob looks for every moment he can to be with Bella. He longs to see her and when he’s away from her and can’t wait to get the chance see her again. During this novel Jacob is the hopeless little boy who likes an older her and can’t seem to get her. As the series progress Bella with see him in a more attractive light and decide between both of the boys.
Genre
Young adult fiction, fantasy, vampire fiction, and romance are the premier genres that describe Twilight. Twilight appeals to young adults because it is one of the many fantasies that teenagers have. The affect vampires have on teens is due to their lost, helpless soul, their bad boy charm, and their impossible, but never ending affection for mortals. Vampires are known for their carelessness of humans and their loss of humanity once turned. The idea of a paranormal romance that is everlasting between to people who were never meant to be together, is what most teens and young adults dream and love about the novel. Falling in love with someone who isn’t human is now the standard trope for fantasy romance. Most teens dream of having the fantasy where a guy will go to the ends of the earth for her, never stop loving her, and will care and protect her no matter what. Most girls want to feel like they are put up on a pedestal and come first no matter what in life. This novel gives young adults a feel of their fantasy come true, this is what makes this series so addicting.
Blurb
A 17 year old girl named Bella Swan moves to Forks, Washington to live with her father for a year. The only person she knew in Forks was a boy named Jacob that she used to play with when she was younger. During school she ends up meeting a boy named Edward Cullen, who is very standoffish and reserved. Edward tries not to come into contact with Bella and ignore her to give her the sign to not come near him. This only drives her to obsess of why and motivated her to figure out all the curious questions she had inside. Soon later she discovers Edward was a vampire and Bella’s scent was the most tempting and delicious thing he every smelt in his 100 years. Edward’s whole family are vampires as well, along with Jacob and his family being wolves. Vampires and wolves are sworn enemies. However, both Edward and Jacob are madly in love with Bella. They would do anything and everything to make sure no harm comes to her. Along the way Bella encounters a group of vampires named James, Victoria, and Laurent. James and Victoria are trackers. Edward said, “He thinks of himself as a hunter and nothing else. His existence is consumed with tracking, and a challenge is all he asks of life.” (397) They will use everything in their power to make sure they get what they want and won’t stop until they do. Edward and his family have to strategize and think smarter and ahead of James and Victoria to prevent Bella and anyone she loves from getting killed.

My Lovely symbolic image
The picture I have drawn above reads life and love in Chinese. I spelt out the names of all the name character in the book who risked their life for either Bella or a loved one. I wrote their names in quantity of their self sacrifice and belief in saving their human loved ones. Because Edward has an undying love for Bella, this leads on to the family taking a role in Bella’s safety. Edward and Jacob care for her the most; Next, Alice, Carlisle, and Esme; Then, Jasper, and Emmett; Lastly, Rosalie. Rosalie has the lowest rank because she envies Bella. She wishes she were human life her, instead of vampire. Knowing that Bella want to become like her sickens her because she believes Bella wants all the wrong things in life. Bella, I put in a different category because she was willing to give up her life for her mother when James threatened Bella. It took the most courage and love out of Bella to do what she did because was the youngest, she was human and hadn’t lived a full life. She said, I’d never given much thought to how I would die. Surely it was a good way to die, in the place of someone else, someone I loved. (1)
Conflict
One of the major conflicts in the story revolved around Bella Swan. Bella has fallen for the most unattainable guy in the whole novel, Edward. Because Edward is a vampire he has a lust for blood and it attracted to the scent of Bella’s blood more than anything. He is a danger to her life and everyone around her. Edward knows what he is and tried to push Bella away in the beginning by warning her that she shouldn’t be friends with him. However, as hard as he tries he can’t seem to stay away from her and Bella can’t resist him either. Bella feeds of her curiosity and mystique of Edward Cullen, which draws her closer and closer to him. They are both in love and the more they love the more chaos and danger they bring into each other’s lives. Every time Bella is with Edward he is always worried about hurting her and losing control of his humanity because she is so fragile and precious and he sees himself as a monster. When Bella is around Edward she leaves her scent him that also attracts other Vampires. One Vampire named James has been after Bella for a long time. His dream is to drink Bella dry and enjoy every last drop. James feeds off of the hunt; he loves a good chase and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Edward, being the fighter and protector he is, lives for Bella and for as long as he lives, won’t ever let anything happen to her.
the BIG IDEA
Love conquers all...
During the novel love was displayed through multiple characters during various times. Edward, being a vampire, was attracted to Bella’s scent more than anything he has ever smelt before. He could have easily given in to drinking her blood for satisfaction and killed her. The only thing restraining him was the incessant love towards Bella. Love overpowers all, no matter what the temptation, the pressure, or the desire. Bella has shown her love for her mother sacrificing her young human life for her. She believed it was noble, she said,” When life offers you a dream so far beyond any of your expectations, it’s not reasonable to grieve when it come to an end.” (1) Bella felt that her mother would of never been brought into the situation had she never gone to Forks. Although she was grateful she had gone, she loved her mother to much to let her pay for her mistake. Both Bella and Edward show their affection, amity and fidelity to one another through their passion for one another. They both feel that they would rather die than not have each other in their lives. They have become a part of one another, so much to make a whole. Edward lives for Bella, despite his constant thirst for her blood he pushed though and swears to never harm her.

What does this book remind me of?
Twilight reminds me very much of Beauty and the Beast. This is so because Bella and Bell are both protagonists in both stories. They live in a small town with their father and end up meeting someone who doesn’t maintain human qualities. Edward, the vampire, who people don’t know is a monster on the outside but loving and protective on the inside. The Beast, a monster on the outside but a gentleman, cares for those around him. Both characters perceived as monsters struggle with human compassion and love in the beginning, but soon see that they are capable of humaneness. Both Bella and Bella look past the exterior and can only see the interior. Both characters fall in love with characters who the audience would never expect to fall in love with. That is one of the reasons the audience was and is infatuated with both series because they are agog to know why and how one ordinary and average girl can fall in love with a creature who most people would perceive vile and an abomination. Both of the guys have dark secrets and carry and even darker past that they are hiding from the world. The twist in Twilight the novel and Beauty and the Beat movie melds with the classic damsel in distress stories.
